Director of Instruction

 

Position Purpose

 

Under the general supervision of the division superintendent, the position is responsible for planning, developing, implementing, and monitoring instructional practices.  Position will prepare presentations, provide leadership and assistance to schools in planning, designing, and improving the instructional program through data analysis.  

 

Essential Performance Responsibilities

• Plans, coordinates and supervises the design of the curriculum aligned to state standards, ensures quality instructional delivery; and supervises the implementation and assessment of instructional programs.
• Interprets assigned instructional programs, philosophy, and policies of the school division to staff, students, and the community at large.
• Effectively works and communicates with parents, community groups, administrators and others on instructional program matters.
• Communicates with internal and external audiences regarding division programs.
• Builds the capacity of teachers, support personnel and school administrators to implement effective instructional programs which includes implementation of a written, taught and assessed curriculum; tiered supports that enable students to receive appropriate support beyond the classroom; and the establishment of sustainable professional learning communities in all schools, which enables teachers to effectively plan, assess and respond to the instructional needs of every student.
• Monitors state and federal legislation governing assigned areas and programs, and ensures that the division is in compliance.
• Attends School Board meetings and prepares and presents reports for the School Board as requested.
• Evaluates the effectiveness of instructional methods and programs and recommend revisions and improvements as needed.
• Performs classroom observations, often in partnership with administrators, and guides teachers to the improvement of instructional performance.
• Provides guidance in the selection of instructional resources, materials, and equipment.
• Guides administrators and teachers in improving instructional delivery and performance through a systematic approach to coaching, feedback, and job-embedded professional development.
• Leads in developing and conducting division-wide professional development.
• Prepares and monitors the instructional program’s budget.
• Assists the human resources and administrators with interviewing and recommending qualified candidates for instructional positions.
• Coordinates and collaborates in meetings with administrators and teachers to disseminate information regarding current developments and best practices in the field.
• Coordinates division-wide educational activities and community events.
• Serves as the central office contact and liaison with families and the community regarding the division’s instructional program.
• Represents the school division in educational projects and initiatives.
• Initiates and maintains effective liaisons with other school districts and professional societies to keep abreast of developments and research.
• Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
• Performs any other related duties as assigned by the superintendent.

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Superintendent.

Equipment

Uses standard office equipment such as computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

 

Travel Requirements

Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

 

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

Works in standard office and school building environments.    

 

Minimum Qualifications 

 

• Master’s Degree in Educational Administration or Curriculum and Instruction required.
• Must have at least three years of successful school administration experience. 
• Must have at least three years of successful experience as a teacher in public schools. 
• Must possess excellent leadership, management, and communication skills. 
• Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school division officials, staff, and the public.
